SolidWorks Help Files & Tutorials

I often see questions on the SolidWorks Forums or Eng-Tips forums that can be more quickly answered if the poster took a minute to search the help files in SolidWorks (Help/SolidWorks Help Topics), rather than waiting for someone to respond to his or her post. For new users, taking the time to go through the SolidWorks tutorial (Help/Solidworks Tutorials) would go a long way to helping them find their way around as well. This isn’t to say that new users shouldn’t post basic questions. I believe that the sharing of information is one of the most powerful tools we, as users, have. I’m merely suggesting that the answers to many "beginner" questions new users have can be quickly and easily found on their computers. In my opinion, SolidWorks has spent a lot of time creating a great tool with the help files, but it is all too often overlooked.

For those of you going to SolidWorks World in New Orleans, I’m giving away two 3Dconnexion controllers. Simply take a cheesy, five question survey and print out the coupon when done. You can find said survey here. I have one SpaceNavigator and one SpaceExplorer to give away to the first two people to present me with their coupon. Only 11 more days!

I use SolidWorks 2003 and have a trouble on measure tool.
When I use measure tool, it won't pop up a window which shows me the length or area of the line or surface that I pick on the dwg.
Could you please tell me why and how to fix that problem.
    Thanks a lot!

    Easy one for you?!
How can I send a model (not a picture) outside my company that doesn't include all the working parts. Something another company can view but not manipulate?

Segmented~ For a source flange ~ instead of one continous circle/elipse there are many short arks.
I create a drawing and save it (*.slddrw) Then I will (Save As) and choose .Dxf. From there the .Dxf is imported into Vellum.
**Where I have no experience with Vellum, I've posed this question to the geniuses at SolidMentor. Here's the link: http://solidmentor.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=239&start;=0#forumpost1334
You may have to sign up (it's free), but it's an awesome SolidWorks resource site anyway.**

I work for a company that uses Solidworks 2007 and Vellum. The Engineers that work here use Vellum. Right now the company is in between mirging all their drafting from Vellum in to Solidworks. Just like most Engineers, the ones here have a hard time letting someone else do there drafting for them. So we have been forced to turn the solidworks drawings into a DXF. then import the DXF. in to Vellum so the Engineers can check to make sure my drawings are up to their specs. When doing this the imported drawings become very segmented, and the file is absolutly enormous.
My question would be is there any options in Solidworks that would help lessen the size of the file and fragmenting of the parts in the drawing? Or is there some type of convertion program that would be recommended to help fix this problem?
**when you say 'segmented', can you provide more details? Are the drawings breaking apart? When you create a SolidWorks drawing (*.slddrw) and then 'save as' a *.dwg how are you doing it?**

    Hi!
I’m working with Solidworks 2007 and I have this sheet metal part with a “Bossa” (feature) command that does not allow me to edit it and I can’t find the same command anywhere else, where can I find it or anything similar (I've tried tools customize and help). It creates like a “bump” on the sheet, out of a simple sketch line whereas I would extrude/cut/fillet to get the same results.
**It sounds like it's a sheetmetal feature, but not being able to see it makes it kind of difficult to be sure. That being said, you can find all sorts of sheetmetal features in your design library (the flyout on the right side). If you want to email me the part, I'll take a look at it for you.
    Jeff**
  • I would suggest reading the help files. I don't, presently have any examples of how to do it.
In the feature manager tree, under lights and cameras, you can add new cameras. I'll try to post a video soon on how to set up cameras.

i mean i dont know to use the cams setup, cams motion and cams creation. Do you have any example?
  • I'm not sure I understand your question. Do you mean the cameras or how do you design cams?
If you're referring to cameras, that can be a post unto itself. Actually, either one could be. Hmmm, perhaps a new topic...

    -Cams setup
    -cams motion

    Thank you

Thanks for the offer of help Jeff, i may well take you up on that if i get no joy, I try to work these things out myself using help files, as i find i remeber stuff better that way!
I was trying to add a mitred flange to a tray (flat part with 4 flanges attached). As a new user, its sometimes not easy o see the wood for the trees !
  • Rich,
As I mentioned in the beginning of the post, go to the forums if you can't find what you're looking for in the help files. I wasn't trying to imply that the help files are the be-all and end-all, just that they can be quicker for more basic problems.
I'm pretty good with sheet metal, so feel free to email me directly with your issue.

" if the poster took a minute to search the help files in SolidWorks (Help/SolidWorks Help Topics), "
what do you do when you follow the help files and they dont work !?!?!
can i get overlapping parts of my sheet model to trim? NO ! even though i went through the help section it wont let me use the trim surfaces command. very frustrating.
