Deelip is correct that measurement in the Adobe Reader is done on tessellated data (as it is in many CAD visualization systems), but the 3D data in the PDF can be exported to STEP, IGIS, etc. from Acrobat 3D 8 and then measured exactly in your favorite high-end application. Hence, I believe the original comment is correct.
