Project Update

Where I just imported the latest iteration of the building, I thought I give you all a quick project update. Currently, the upper level assembly has 4550 parts in it and 10,500 bodies (I need to dig into the assembly to find out why). There’s 383 Sub-assemblies, so there are only 14 mates being resolved in the upper level assembly. Mass properties, though a bit skewed weight-wise, are:
Mass = 48,204,613.98 pounds (24,102.307 tons)
Volume = 1,331,786,532.68 cubic inches (770,709.8 cubic feet)

Lately, we’ve been running into some huge problems with PDMWorks. Last week, I was crashing to desktop quite consistantly when using PDMWorks. I’ve been working with SolidWorks tech support to figure out what’s happening. Currently, there appears to be an issue with a dll file in Windows (x64) that’s partly to blame. The current work around is to have PDM turned off whenever possible. Actually, the only addin I have turned on is SolidJott (if you don’t know about SolidJott, you really should check it out). I’m still missing my SpacePilot, but system stability is more important than anything, or so I keep telling myself.

The project is progressing along nicely, however, and the powers-that-be are happy with what we’ve produced so far.

If you’re working on large assemblies, I’d love to hear about your issues and how you solved them.

    I’ve had the same issue with one of my clients (XP x64 and PDMWorks instability#. It usually manifests a crash of the assembly is large #2k+ components).
    Their top level assembly is 20K+ components. Ultimately they were forced into checking in subassemblies.
    I submitted this and got the same response of “Turn off PDMWorks whenever possible”. Needless to say the client is not happy.
    Managing a top level assemb;y with over 4K is going to be challenging. If they’ve got over 10K bodies that may impact performance / stability.
    You may want to look at breaking up that top level assembly into more sub-assemblies.

    Thanks for the update Jeff.
    Do you know what the dll file is that Windows x64 is having problems with? I am running Vista x64 and I am having a problem with ntdll.dll crashing Office 2007 all the time. Let me know if you know any other details.
    Thanks

    Brian – My top level assembly has 4 sub-assemblies and each of those is comprised of sub-assemblies that are comprised of sub-assemblies. For this project, it’s what makes sense. It allows for control of equipment by floor or area. The bodies is a result of imported data and the fact that I’m working with a group of people who are inexperienced with 3D modelling.
    Jason – I don’t remember the dll file, not that it would matter. SolidWorks is still working on figuring out the “why” of it all.
    Devon – Workgroup.

    I am having the same problem with Office 2007 apps crashing all the time due to ntdll.dll running Vista 64 & SolidWorks 2009 & PDM works. Any fixes?
    *I haven’t heard of anything, yet, David. However, I’ve upgraded to ’09 and haven’t had any problems so far. I’ve even been able to start using my SpacePilot again without any crashes.*
